| - My boyfriend and I decided we were in need of a mini vacation and the idea of a short drive up to Mt. Charleston sounded pretty perfect. Originally, we booked one night at the "resort" but later added a second night. I had to call to add the second night, but that was ok because it ended up being cheaper to call than it would have been had I booked online.
I was warned in advance that I'm paying for the location, not the hotel. I am glad I had that warning, because while the Mt. Charleston Resort is cozy, it is not fancy. I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a resort. It's definitely got a ski lodge vibe to it, from the wood paneling to the large comfy couches surrounding a fire place in the lobby to the mounted animal heads hanging on the walls.
Another warning: there is no wifi. It's ok - I was on a cell phone detox and phones stayed locked in the safe.
Anyway, we got in Friday night and the gentleman who checked us was extremely friendly. We checked to see if there were any suites available, but they were all booked (thanks to a wedding that weekend), which was fine. We carried our luggage up the stairs to the 3rd floor, because there isn't an elevator, and made ourselves comfy in the room. Our balcony and view were nice, but it was also overlooking the back parking lot which had a huge dumpster in it. Meh.
Friday night we ate at the bar and shared a tomato soup with grilled cheese. It was so good!! The bartender was really friendly and attentive. The next day, we went down to breakfast and although the service was super slow (and I do mean SLOW), the food was good. I got the egg breakfast and my boyfriend got steak and eggs. His steak was delicious! After doing some outdoorsy activities around the area, we warmed up then went to dinner. We got there at just the right time, because we got our food right as a long line of people gathered at the door. It's important to note that at the resort, there's a bar with food and there's a restaurant. The only other restaurant at Mt. Charleston is up the mountain a bit. So anyway.
I had ordered chocolate covered strawberries & champagne for us, which was supposed to arrive at 8-ish. At 9pm, they still hadn't arrived so we called down and they had never been made. So finally, around 10:15pm, they arrived.
So overall, the restaurant is good, but holy moly, it is slower than a snail. The "resort" is nothing fancy, but it is cozy. The staff were really nice each time we interacted with them (booking, check in, asking questions, calling about strawberries, etc). I think next time I'd want to book a suite, which you can't book on their site... I guess there aren't very many.
