  • Came to Smith and Wollensky for an early dinner the week we were at the MGM for a staycation, mainly because husband wanted steak and we do not like CraftSteak. We specifically wanted someplace we had never been to before that we could walk to, so we wanted to try this legendary steakhouse chain. This is a decent, reliable place to get a steak, but I wouldn't rate it in the top steakhouses I have been to in Las Vegas. I ordered the surf and turf, which was a half maine lobster and a petite fillet. I thought both were okay, nothing I have not have better in other places. The prices were not outrageous, as I don't remember what we paid. If it was too expensive, I would have remembered. My biggest complaint was that the fillet was bland and it tasted as if there was no seasoning whatsoever. My husband had the bone-in fillet which was more flavorful, but he said it did not hold a candle to his favorite fillet from Vic and Anthony's in the Golden Nugget. Normally I would give a place like this three stars, because it was okay. But I had seen that the coconut cake that is served here was highlighted in a food network show and other food shows. I don't normally partake in dessert at all, ever, but I had to try it. It was "holy shit," good, and is probably the best dessert I have ever tasted. Here's a picture of it from a famous food blog that I frequently read: http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2011/02/sugar-rush-smith-wollenskys-coconut-cake-dessert-nyc.html This is like coconut heaven, if there is such a place. I could have eaten a troth of this cake, but they would take me away in a coma. My husband, who does not like coconut, even tried it and said it was pretty damn good (he'll never admit he loved it though). I would come here again just to eat coconut cake. Thank god it is on the strip in an area that is a pain in the ass to get to, or I might do that too much.
