  • Why can't I give ZERO stars? I moved to Phoenix about two years ago. I joined this "gym" due to it's proximity to my home. For someone who puts a high amount of value on a good workout, this place is a constant disappointment. They value quantity over quality. The following are the reasons I cancelled my membership: 1. The front desk attendant was useless. God forbid you have a question because they're always deeply involved in a cell phone or text conversation and the scanner is usually on top of the counter facing outward for you to check yourself in. 2. The odor. I've been going to various gyms around the country for 15 years. NEVER have I been a member at a gym that does not offer towel service or at least has a bottle of cleaning solution and paper towels available. LA Fitness on Camelback offers neither. Is cleanliness too much to ask of a gym? I don't mind wiping down a machine after using it...just give me the option. 3. It's incrediby crowded. While a member, in order to complete my workout without having to alter it while weight stations were being used or to complete it fully I had to arrive at the gym at 9:00 p.m. I tried going earlier, even at 5:30 a.m., but it was always jam packed. There are short time limits and often lines of people waiting for cardio equipment. 4. There are no rules. I have seen people working out in jeans, polo shirts, casual dress shoes, and even flip flops and sandals. Once I was certain I saw someone working out in their bar clothes just before going to the bar. I've never heard of a gym that doesn't have a dress code. Anyone who has ever dropped a weight on their foot will tell you that flip flops are dangerous to wear at a gym. There is also no rule for putting away your weights when you are finished with a particular station. It's your job to put away your weight...that's rule #1. C'mon! There is also no rule against using your cell phone (talking or texting) while on gym equipment. All it does is waste time. If the call or text is that important, get off the equipment so someone else can use it. Come back to it when you're done. 5. There is no trainer monitoring the weight lifting area. This is more of a personal gripe than something I expect. It's not safe for someone to be performing excercises without proper form. Workout at LA Fitness on Camelback once and you'll see some pretty interesting stuff! I think every gym (some do) should have someone helping people who are lifting weights learn and use proper form. In my opinion, if you aren't going to use proper form please leave the station so I can use it the way it is meant to be used. 6. There isn't enough of the most often used equipment. Two free weight bench press stations and two free weight squat stations. These are two of the most used pieces of equipment at any gym and they simply don't have enough of them. It creates long wait times to find one that opens up. Any reputable gym, especially one with as many members as this one, should know better than this. These are usually the two pieces of equipment gyms have the most of. 7. The equipment they do have is consistently breaking down due to it's age. The weights and machines are all very old and need to be updated. This results in machines, benches, etc. being broken. Simply changing a nut or bolt would fix the problem but it's not uncommon for the broken piece of equipment to be "out of order" for a week or more. The result is even longer wait times to complete your workout. I am in no way condemning L.A.Fitness. I know of other people who workout at various L.A. Fitness locations throughout the Valley and they enjoy them. The location on Camelback Road is to be avoided. I hope this helps those of you out there who value the time you spend at the gym, for whatever purpose you go here for.
