| - I wanted to get more involved in the community. After some research, I discovered the rescue mission and decided that I wanted to be a part of what they do. Their volunteer program is the best I've ever been a part of. Marcus (runs the program) does such a great job coordinating and making it fun for everyone. He genuinely cares about the homeless community and he really believes in everything the mission stands for.
I usually try and go once a week and work the community meal. There are usually about 25-30 of us pushing out anywhere from 500-700 trays for the hour. I like to refill the waters and bus the trays. It gives me an opportunity to walk around the room and really get to know the people I'm serving. whether it be working the lines, the dish room, the trash, working the main room, or simply just greeting them with a clean cup for water at the door... There is a job for every personality.
I didn't realize how much being a part of this program would really affect my life. It is truly a humbling experience. The people in this community are wonderful people, often looked over or down upon. After hearing some of their stories... I couldn't help but be inspired by how kind, gentle, and grateful they are, even after some of the awful circumstances they stumbled upon in their lives. Almost always polite and positive, these people never forget a smile and a please and thank you. I can't imagine myself being so pleasant if the situation was reversed:/ I look forward to going every week because of them.
However, the rescue mission offers more than just a warm meal. It offers recovery programs and education, housing for families, a thrift store, clothing to people trying to get jobs, and guidance for assistance with in the community.
If you are looking to give back in any way, this is an organization I would highly recommend giving to. Whether it be your time, knowledge, or even a bag of clothes for donation, they will always be my first choice.
