| - Called Aamco after transmission failed unexpectedly and without warning. They offered to tow the car for free (on the condition that I would complete repairs at Aamco) and diagnose before doing any repair work. The "diagnosis" consisted of checking the transmission fluid level (which I had already done myself) and inspecting the exterior for leaks or signs of wear. I am also told that they checked the onboard computer logs and found no problems.
Obviously this "diagnostic" did not reveal any useful insight into the actual condition of the transmission. But at this point, I'm on the hook for a towing fee (initially estimated at around 50 or 60 dollars; actual cost: $80).
However, for "only" $800 dollars they will take apart the transmission for a real diagnosis. They will waive $800 diagnosis fee if you agree to have the car repaired at Aamco. They would not provide any estimate at all (e.g., "how much would replacing the pump cost," or "how much will a rebuild run me?") without taking apart the transmission..... For $800.
I called around a few other shops and found that mechanics were a lot more willing to guestimate repair jobs ($700-800 for pump replacement, $1300-1700 for rebuilds). When I explained this to the Aamco guy, his story changed. He suddenly remembered that he could give me a 50% discount on the disassembly/diagnosis fee. And that he would match the price of any competitor. Now, to be fair, that is a pretty good deal.
Additionally, Aamco DOES have a pretty good reputation for the actual work that they do. At least that's what the other local mechanics said. But they also all agreed that Aamco has a reputation for overcharging customers by luring them in with promises of "free" services (towing, waiving diagnotics fee, etc....) until the customer has no choice but to pay for it or be on the hook for a substantial bill and have nothing to show for it.
I have no reason to doubt the quality of the work they do or would have done on my vehicle. However, I decided to suck the $80 loss and go to another mechanic than risk being stuck with an $800 bill with nothing to show for it OR a $2000 (or more) bill for work that should have cost substantially less. At one point, the Aamco rep. DID promise that the work would "definitely be less than $3000." My car is only worth about $3000.
