  • The theatre itself is great. But apparently my experience of performances there is different from that of other reviewers. I was a concert producer for vocal music for a number of years, so I don't listen to a performance with quite the same ears that the average audience member does. That said, both the people I've gone with (a 16-year-old with little theatrical and no music background, and a friend my own age with a similar lack) had much of the same complaints I did. In my case, it doesn't help that I have perfect pitch. And the actors... well, they don't. My biggest and main issue really is the sound. I've been to two shows there in the last few months, and both times it was bad. The first show I saw was Legally Blond. That night, there was horrible feedback in the sound system throughout much of the show, and throughout the first half, various fairly relevant cast members (like, oh, the actress playing Elle) had their mics go dead. For most of the second half, Elle was just inaudible. When you are being backed up by a dozen voices that *are* on mic, it essentially means no one can hear a word you're singing. Some of the cast had stellar voices, but there wasn't one who didn't have uncomfortably pitchy moments that made me twitch. Tonight I saw Avenue Q. Again, pitch problems throughout, but most weren't too bad. Again, my biggest complaint was the sound. All the mics were on, which was nice, but about half the actors sounded muffled and muddy, like they were singing through a paper bag. They re-wrote a number of the lines to bring the show up to date, and because of the muddy sound I couldn't actually pick out what the words were. The mix was bad, too - the more actors singing at once, the worse the mix was - some were simply not audible. And lastly - nasty feedback, and the sound was just plain too loud. My guest was regretting not wearing earplugs. Most of the actors are fairly good, for community theatre. Don't go expecting Broadway quality, and you'll be fine. I spend time twitching in pain when I'm watching their shows, but the average listener won't notice it.
