  • Clearly this place, like so many other new trendy businesses popping up these days, has "Instagrammability" totally in mind as a business strategy. From the neon signs and hanging decor, to the whole scheme of pouring liquid nitrogen on a tray when your order is presented to you for that smoke effect, everything begs patrons to snap and share a mouthful of pics of their Cool N2 experience. I am more taken by the tanks of liquid nitrogen placed up front than anything else though. Liquid nitrogen of course is what sets this newcomer Queen West ice cream shop from Kekou a few doors away. It's not a new gimmick in Toronto (though the first time for me was actually in Hong Kong), but it does make for a smokey show that impresses visitors (and also good for the Insta, lolz). My sister wanted to try the "Storm in the 6" special, but apparently their cotton candy machine was down that day, so what she got instead was a bizarro hybrid of that with a substitute whipped cream top. The concoction featured (and it took me a while to figure this out) a passionfruit flavoured pop ice that seriously looked like tiny limestone or coal bits, no thanks to the activated charcoal in each bite, which only made the sour flavours that much more perplexing an experience. On the other hand I tried the blueberry shortcake, which in short is just blueberry ice cream with bits of cheesecake and graham crackers, topped with whipped cream, and a syringe pumped with very sweet blueberry syrup that does not do much to enhance the flavour (unless you like things very sweet). Creations takes about a couple minutes to make when it's barely busy. If people are getting annoying with their selfies, tell them that the pink room in the back was where the Criterion Collection films and the porn was kept back when this property was Queen Video. Them kids probably don't even know what a video store is! Too much history for ya? You just want to live in a curated present, huh? [TTC (this location): 501 or 510 streetcars to Queen/Spadina]
