| - After browsing the Yelp reviews for the best lunch and burgers, I convinced my extended family to dine here for lunch. I was really excited and knew I would order the Melting Pot burger.
The short review is that it just isn't that good. I'll confess to being a foodie and probably a borderline burger critic. So with that said, I'm not saying that Dotty's doesn't have great burgers or service. What I am saying is that I've had better tasting burgers. I think that their menu items have potential but that there are things they could do to elevate my taste buds.
Now, for the long review. We ordered cheese curds for the table. These were pretty good but over-cooked. The batter was tasty and not too heavy. But since they were overcooked we were left with a lot of cheesey batter bites rather than cheese curds. The ranch dressing/dip they were served with was delicious (and upon asking for more, we were notified we'd be charged for it).
I ordered the Melting Pot burger (3 kinds of cheese, garlic mayo, bacon, I added tomato and lettuce). It was just fine (however the rest of my party was satisfied probably because they frequent WI burger places and I frequent DC burger places). More details: Unless you otherwise specify, all burgers are served medium. My burger was medium, so hooray! The meat itself was good but was a bit bland. Spice it up a bit! (I'm guessing the oil or whatever they cook them in overwhelms the beef). The three cheeses were piled on each other and weren't melted entirely. The garlic mayo (called garlic sauce) was not that garlic-y. And as for the bacon, I could barely taste it and I'm not even kidding you! So maybe the bacon was under-cooked? Either way, it should stand out somewhat. The bun, was lovely!! Light, fluffy and the flavor was complimentary to the burger. However, if you order your burger and it sits for a while, it could get soggy.
So overall, it was fine. If this place is convenient, go there! Everything was reasonably priced and their beer menu features 89% locally brewed beer (super great!). Fries/sides are a la carte but you can easily eat a burger, add fries and have a beer for $15. The service we received was great! But if you eat a lot of burgers, this place will just leave you searching for a better one with better ingredients.
Also, if you drive here, there is street parking available and there are two parking ramps, on is on Francis and Johnson St, the other is across University, on Francis, past Wandos & the Red Barn. If the one on Francis and Johnson is full, try the other one and find it by passing Wandos, and turning left before you run into the dead end.
