| - If the service were better, definite 5 star review. Saw the "Best Place to Take a Foodie" award for this place in Best of Phoenix so the wife and I decided to try it for our first anniversary dinner. The reviews on Yelp were a little discouraging, so I was worried.
The food was outstanding. Pozole soup is a favorite of mine, and this was the best I've ever had, one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. I think my wife would place it at her all time #1. We enjoyed it tremendously. Also had the tuna ceviche, which is brilliant, with its lime sorbet. It was just delicious and creative.
I was going to get the pork ribs, but the server persuaded me that brisket is the star of the barbacoa menu. That was some very impressive brisket. With the supplied tortillas, it made for a stupendous taco. My wife got the special goat tacos, which were very good also. For sides we got the creamy rice with corn, which was very nice, the pinto beans, also very nice, and the crazy spinach, which is prepared with peanuts, raisins, garlic, and grannysmith apple. No way that should taste good, but it does.
Service was a major weakness. Our main server was nice and well informed, but the dishes were brought by 3 different people in pretty random order and with poor timing. Our server had specified the order he wanted dishes to arrive, but the other fellows ignored him. I should point out that business was very slow. It was Sunday night and there were maybe 5 parties in the whole joint.
Having eaten at several Michelin-starred restaurants, I feel comfortable saying the cooking is absolutely world class here. Cocktails are also surprising and delicious. But the service is just not professional yet. As it turns out, we loved our meal anyway, but for some the service might be a deal breaker. And that's a disservice to the outstanding, imaginative food.
One last thing, don't let the "tapas portion size" fool you. We got two starters, two mains, and three side dishes and had more than we could finish.
