  • ITS AN INDOOR FARMER'S MARKET yea! My first visit to the Downtown 3rd Farmer's Market was last Friday. A friend who is a regular patron there invited us to go. He knew all the vendors and introduced us to all of them. It's an interesting group of people who are passionate about eating healthy and local. My experiences that day were in meeting those neat people, learning about their offerings and being inspired to use new ingredients. We learned about the SUPERFOOD Stinging Nettle which is amazingly beneficial. Coming from the south and having unfortunate run ins with Nettle in the woods, I knew very well not to touch it. The milky substance will light you up on your skin. I was surprised to learn though that the leaves of the plant will relieve the burning sensation if you happen to get it on your skin. The plant when handled correctly is wonderful to use in your juicer or smoothies. I want to learn more about that and experiment with using it. I also had a long educational conversation with Rosalind and Randy Gibson of THE BLOOMING DESERT HERB FARM which is certiied by the NV Department of Agriculture and they have a Southern NV Health District Permit. Rosalind is a master herbalist and can help you with all sorts of culinary and medicinal herbs. We did purchase some smoked salt for cooking which is made by burning certain types of wood in a bonfire. So much smokiness concentration of flavor in just a few grains of salt. We used it in some grilled shrimp later that week. Next I had a long and enjoyable conversation with A JAZZY JAM AND THE JUICY PICKLE. One of the owners was a former food and beverage manager for one of the casinos. I was so excited to find APPLE BUTTER there and of course had to take that home. It is hard to find that out here in the desert. If you've never had it, it is the consistency of applesauce with the flavor of apples, cinnamon, allspice. It is typically served over your choice of bread like a biscuit or toast. I also picked up some sunflower shoots that i used in a smoothie later. $4.00 for a little container. That seemed a little pricey to me especially after I saw it for half that at the Tivoli Farmer's market the next day. It was good, crisp and fresh, though. Rounding out the visit I got a fresh smoothie for $8.00 with kale, cucumber, lemon and orange to take with me. It was refreshing since my car registered 122 degrees upon leaving! Can't wait to come back when the food truck vendors are there and sample that too.
