I didn't come for the market, I came for the sushi! Happy Hour 2:30PM-4:30PM Daily. Items and prices listed at the bottom.
I'm from CA... so when my friend told me we were going to a market to eat sushi I just kind of looked at her funny, but now I'm a convert! Hopefully my friend doesn't kill me for revealing her favorite sushi place to the masses.
Seating - NOT good for groups:
We came here on a Saturday with 3 of her friends... the seating arrangement isn't really conducive to big groups - it is basically a counter with two sets of 4 chairs. This wouldn't be such a problem except for that in order to get happy hour prices you have to eat at the counter.... it is okay standing while eating will help your digestion (totally made up but probably true).
Sushi Chef Jose - EXCELLENT:
Also, when we went there was only one sushi chef: Jose. Jose probably made it a 4-star experience all by himself. When we got there poor Jose was suffering the ridiculous attacks/criticisms of an old foggy... the guy was complaining that his sushi was bad and that it was the wrong thing... he told them to throw it away... I was thinking to myself: 1. You're eating sushi in a supermarket during happy hour ... this isn't exactly fine dining! and 2. Don't be so nasty!
Jose seemed to be a little phased by this but still tried to be cheerful. Poor guy had the handle making the sushi, cleaning up, and doing all the little prep work. Our group placed two pretty big orders and he got to work right away. While he was working he was very good at making conversation, telling jokes, etc. I think he said he has been a sushi chef for either 10 or 20 years.
Food - Good, Fresh and Cheap!
I don't profess to be a sushi expert in any sense of the word but I thought the sashimi here was pretty good especially considering the price. My friend and I got two orders of tuna sashimi and an order of albacore sashimi. They were nice big cuts. My friend actually is kind of a sushi fiend and she loves the place but normally just orders the tuna sashimi.
I tried a piece of octopus and it was alright - octopus just isn't my thing.
We also got a spicy tuna roll that was pretty good - nothing exceptional but good. However, the spicy tuna hand roll was not that flavorful - maybe needed a little more spicy tuna - but it was decent with soy sauce and wasabi.
I would recommend coming here with 1 or 2 friends and just ordering plate after plate of the sashimi. It is a great deal! The fish seems fresh and they don't skimp on the cuts.
Also, don't forget to tip your sushi chef well - they are basically one man shows.
