  • On Friday, June 22, 2018, my teenage daughter had an appointment with Dr. Richard L Gardner III at Las Vegas Foot & Ankle clinic. The front desk staff was really kind and welcoming. We (my teenage daughter, my eight-year-old daughter and I) were placed in an exam room. Dr. Gardner walked into the exam room and immediately began to address my daughter. He asked her several questions. He didn't introduce himself or even looked at me. Moments later, Dr. Gardner says in a demeaning tone "do you understand English or know what I'm saying?" I stated that I do speak English and stated, "why would you ask that?" I then asked if he was insinuating that I didn't understand or speak English because I'm Hispanic? In a nonchalant tone, he said "Yes" and shrugged his shoulders like what he just said was not insensitive or culturally incompetent. I told him that he was insensitive, unprofessional and that we wanted another doctor. I asked him to get out of the exam room. He walked out and didn't even apologize or even acknowledged how I felt about the situation. My teenage daughter began to cry and was very upset about the incident. She said, "I can't believe what I just witnessed from a doctor and how he belittle you without a care in the world because of the color of your skin." It is very disheartening to see how a professional doctor's actions could adversely impact the clinical care that he was supposed to provide to his patients. He made us feel like we weren't worth anything because of our ethnicity. My daughter wanted to leave immediately and not return to Las Vegas Foot & Ankle Clinic but I told her that we had every right to be seen just like everyone else. We were blatantly discriminated against. A few minutes later another doctor came and completed our appointment. I discussed what had just occurred. He stated that he was the person in charge and this is not how they operate or treat their customers. He states that he would also speak with Dr. Gardner about incident. He deserves no stars but unfortunately this how yelp works.
