| - My husband surprised me with a weekend stay for my 40th birthday (on Super Bowl weekend, no less). We checked in late on Sat night and were apologetically informed that there were no king beds available. My husband is 6'3" and 2 days in a queen bed would make him a restless, unhappy man so we asked the front desk clerk if there was anything she could do for us. What started out as a problem turned into a blessing in disguise. The wonderful front desk person graciously offered to upgrade us to a room that was newly renovated (I mean...so new it still smelled like fresh paint and new carpet), spacious, tastefully appointed (in that neo-classical old Vegas vibe) and had virtually every amenity we needed or wanted.
The bed was comfortable and clean (no bed bugs or stray hairs- we checked!), the bathroom was beautiful with quartz counters and the shower/toilet combo separate from the vanity. The shower was massive (so big it could probably fit 6 people if you're into that sort of thing, I suppose) with a built in bench and rainhead shower along with a standard shower head.
The room boasted a microwave, mini fridge, mini dishwasher (SO cute! complete with dish soap and dishwasher soap), full size "kitchen" sink, toaster and coffee maker. It was equipped with a large counter/bar area with 2 bar stools and cupboard space above the sink filled with glasses, mugs and flatware. We could have stayed 2 months, not just 2 nights!
The room almost gave an "entertaining area" vibe because along with the bar area and stools, it also had 2 large sitting chairs between a small table just in front of the spacious window (that unfortunately offered a view of nothing spectacular...but I guess you can't have it all, right?). If you wanted to bring friends into the room, there was plenty of room for them, unlike other hotel rooms that have a bed, small desk and one desk chair.
The TV was huge for a hotel room. I've never been in a hotel room with a larger TV. It had a beautifully clear picture and an interactive remote that was easy to operate.
The only negative things I can say about the room itself was the lack of drawer space for clothes. I make it a point to unpack my suitcase if I'm in a hotel longer than 2 days so fortunately for me, I didn't need any drawer space for this quick staycation getaway. However, if we were staying longer, storage space for clothes would have been a real issue (serial overpacker that I am...). The other issue was the counter just in front of the "kitchen" sink. It had an outward facing curvature and stuck out so far that I had to stand on my tippy toes to reach the handle to turn the sink on. I'm an average height of 5'5" so if it was that difficult for me, I don't see how anyone shorter could reach that handle! Very odd.
On Sunday we ordered breakfast via room service. Don't do it. Just don't. An hour wait (which is pretty standard at most hotels, I know) and we each got a 2 egg breakfast that consisted of 2 eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes, toast and a soda (in a can). It was $88 for that. The food wasn't bad by any means but for $88 it should have been a-freaking-mazing! Not so much. Live and learn, I guess.
The rest of our weekend consisted of lounging around, relaxing, eating, watching the Super Bowl (ugh...don't get me started on that farce!) and just in general doing absolutely nothing. Seriously - it was great!
The hotel has lots of dining options (and even an onsite Starbucks....yesssssss!) and is in general kept very clean. It's open and airy and unlike a lot of casinos, the cigarette smoke isn't overbearing. The sports book (ah hem, excuse me, the SUPERBOOK) is in a class by itself. The most gargantuan TV screens I've ever seen, tons of comfy seating with bars and servers all around. We didn't opt to watch the big game here (people were telling us they'd staked a spot as early as 7am. Yeeeaaaahhhh, I'm cool on that.) but instead enjoyed it in our room on the massive TV screen in there - I think it was at least 55 inches. At least.
There's a 24 hour gift and sundries shop for all your necessities that you may have left at home or any munchies (including alcohol) that you might need during your stay. However, be prepared to pay big for everything there.
After reading other reviews, I think it's safe to say that if you want a decent room, splurge a little and upgrade to one of the newly renovated ones. The staff that we encountered during our stay was wonderful. The room was beautiful, the restaurant that we ate at (Benihana) was fabulous (my take on that in a separate review) and all in all, as locals we'll definitely be back when we want to get away from home but not too far from home.
