  • I've been meaning to review this place for a while, but my recent apartment search in a new city has helped me better articulate and appreciate what a great experience I had at Maxon Towers. I lived in this building from 2011 to 2013 while attending grad school at Carnegie Mellon. As such, one of my highest priorities at the time was convenience in terms of access to public transit and living amenities (e.g. grocery store, drug store). There are several bus stops for major bus lines literally right outside the front door, and many of said living amenities, as well as shops and restaurants, are within easy walking distance. Keep in mind though, living right on Forbes Ave means there will be at least a moderate amount of street noise. Susan and the rest of the management staff were consistently friendly, helpful, and attentive. Bonus points for a 24-hour doorman - an all-too-rare luxury that provided peace of mind for a lady living alone on a busy street. On the rare occasion that there was an issue with something in the unit, a maintenance person was sent up and the problem was fixed promptly, usually within a few minutes. Proof that having on-site management can make a huge difference! I also got my security deposit back upon move-out, with only a small portion retained for an agreed-upon carpet cleaning. Future apartment managers of mine will have some hefty shoes to fill. Frankly, the facilities themselves can be somewhat dated in places, especially the fitness center and the windows in the units, but this is only a minor imperfection, all things considered. My unit was newly updated for the most part, but I can't attest to how updated the other units are. The resident demographic tends to skew toward the older side (during my final months here I noticed an increase in tenant diversity though). As a full-time student and self-proclaimed "old soul" who isn't into loud parties, etc., the environment was a good fit for me, but if you seek a more vibrant social life in your housing situation, it may not be. Yes, the rent is quite high for Pittsburgh (and even Squirrel Hill specifically), but considering the aforementioned excellent management, etc., it is most certainly worth it.
