| - On one hand, the 407 ETR folks are modern day robber barons holding our gridlocked city hostage under the barrel of a gun. On the other hand, the well-lit, smooth concrete lanes make for a delightful drive.
The 407 has saved my ass many a time, and I would recommend taking it if you're late for something important (wedding, etc.), there is a huge backup on the 401 (or another highway you can avoid), or the weather is horrible. I definitely feel saving driver on the 407.
I live in Markham, and I take the 407 from Markham road to the 404 all the time on weekends. It saves a good 15-20 minutes if there's traffic -- which there almost always is except at night -- and costs under $3 (it's cheaper in off-peak times).
If you use the 407 more than a few times a year, get a transponder and link your account to your credit card as this will save you a lot of time.
I don't drive to work, but if you are planning to commute to work via the 407 keep in mind that it will still be busy during rush hour and, depending on how far you are going, it might cost you more than your car insurance (or car payments!).
