| - I love this place! (Well I mean, I love this place as much as one can love a place where you get your butt kicked on a regular basis :) )
After getting injured and falling off my exercise routine, I went looking for a gym and a trainer to help me get back on track. Despite looking thin, a DEXA scan cruelly revealed the truth. Fit, I was not. 33.7% bodyfat, I was. So I sought out a gym that would be close to home (yep, laziness speaking). I chose this gym because of what other reviewers mentioned - it's a cozy feeling gym that is never too busy and is equipped with a good variety of workout equipment. Most of the time, I only see other trainers working with their clients. You can either come on a monthly membership to use the facilities on your own, or if you are working with a trainer, access to the gym is included.
I'm currently training with Mel, who's also the owner of the gym. It's been great that he varies up my routine so I am never bored. When my sister came to town, he graciously allowed her to train with me for only $10. She had a great time (and also got her butt kicked.) Their training prices seem very reasonable, especially if you prepay for the 36 session package.
What's also been pretty cool is that the training sessions come with an initial diet consult with Alex, who is a registered dietitian and professional coach to those who are interested in competition body building. After doing my free initial session I went ahead and upgraded to get a regular diet plan. What's been great about this combo of diet + workout is that I feel pretty accountable on all fronts. I send in a weekly photo + progress report and in return receive adjustments to my meal plan and workout routine.
So none of this matters if you don't see results right? I'm 6 weeks into training now, and after a 1 year hiatus of zero weights I can already see definition in my arms and legs, and I've lost about 1.5 inches around my waist. I still FEEL like I'm carrying around a spare tire since we lose weight from our extremities before our core, but I know this is a process and I certainly can't expect overnight results...especially when I stop to consider the number of donuts that went into the making of my current form. (Darn you, 24 hour Pinkbox for being just down the street!) :p
If you're anywhere close to Bodysport at all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that you at least drop in for an initial consult and check out the facilities yourself.
p.s. I also appreciate the small details that this gym thought about that I'd not seen in other gyms - aromatherapy diffusers to help with gym-smell, and air fresheners sprays in the bathrooms. Also note that they supply towels, but there isn't a water fountain, only bottles of water & other sports drinks for sale, so plan accordingly.
Update : at 9 weeks in I did a followup DEXA scan. After 8 weeks, training 3x a week (plus cardio on my own) I lost 8 lbs of fat, gained 6 pounds of muscle, and have brought my left/right body imbalance down to 0.1lbs. Current bodyfat percentage - 23.8% So you absolutely get results!
