We stumbled across The King's Kitchen because we couldn't get into Room 112 and someone recommended King's. Because my heart swelled three sizes upon finding out they donate 100% of profits to feeding Charlotte's homeless, I would go again but I didn't find the food to be worth the cost.
The shrimp and grits came with five medium sized pieces of shrimp and about a cup and a half of grits. And while it was delicious, it wasn't $20 worth of food or preparation. Grits may be even cheaper than rice and beans and the shrimp (being a Charlotte restaurant and all) wasn't fresh caught.
Others bought the fried chicken dinner that came with dry cornbread or a biscuit (which was fairly good) and THREE sides for $14. Meh. The chicken wasn't fried long enough so the skin was soggy and juicy -- but not in a good way. In a way that screamed cook me longer. The cabbage isn't soul food cabbage but was quite firm and inedible for us real Southern girls. The macaroni and cheese was very good as was the mashed potatoes.
Another girl ordered the flounder and it didn't say in the description that it was fried. She ordered that because they'd run out of baked chicken and didn't want something the fried heaviness. So much for that.
