| - I travel for a living. So I have criteria for a hotel. Let's go through them - five criteria, five stars - seems like a reasonable thing.
1) Comfortable work area. When I get to a hotel, I generally need to check email and do a little work. A comfortable work area with wifi that doesn't require me to mortgage the house (preferably free - I don't have to explain free) is required. Enough power sockets required to power my 3-4 gadgets overnight.
Four Points by Sheraton has free wifi, a nice swivelly leather chair and a reasonable desk that allows me to actually open my laptop without bumping into the crap they put on the desk. One star.
2) Bathroom. Given the security conditions, reasonable toiletries and a decent shower.
This hotel has an epic fail here. The shower is only five foot tall. I'm over a foot taller than that. Ducking to wash my hair is not fun. The toiletries are so-so - nothing special. I'm not giving this one a star.
3) The Bed. It has to be long enough (six feet is a minimum) and not so stacked with pillows that I have to throw them all off to get in it. It has to be comfortable, not lumpy.
Not enthused by the bed. I got a few hours of sleep, but not enough that I didn't have a hard time during the morning until my coffee kicked in. No stars here either.
4) Breakfast. It has to be reasonably priced, with nice staff that aren't bugging you every ten seconds, with something akin to a TV or newspaper so you can catch up. Hot breakfast that actually tastes good is good.
This hotel has a buffer style breakfast. At $8.25+tax, it isn't overpriced compared to some I've seen. It's ordinary with hot and cold sections, the usual juices waffles and pastries. The hot section had omelets (pre-made), bacon and sausage, country potatoes, and corn beef hash. All reasonable, but not spectacular. There is one TV in here, which is tuned down so it doesn't interrupt, tuned to ABC. The staff are friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Yes, another star here.
5) Room and Hotel "feel" - ok, this is the touchy feely one. The staff are friendly (even when Amex was being obnoxious) and it wasn't a noisy hotel, but it's in the middle of nowhere. Book your cab ride early. It does have a shuttle to the airport every 30 minutes in the AM, and you can call from the airport for it in the evening. I guess this is a plus, but I'm left unenthused by this portion. Given the hotel is in the middle of no-where, a half hour outside of Pittsburgh, it's kind of out of the way. Half a star?
So count em up and you get 2.5 stars. At the end of the day, this guy is average - I've stayed in better, and the shower is a disaster.
