  • Get going early and get out to the dam before the crowd and you will have a better experience and more options for your tour schedule. This would be a good activity for East Coasters suffering from jet lag. Take advantage of an early rise to get on the road (traffic will back up in Boulder City). Parking was $7. We did the full tour experience for $30 per person (dam tour, power plant tour, exhibits). The exhibits are okay and educational, but nothing incredibly memorable or awe-inspiring. The dam itself though is pretty impressive. If you try to go cheap and only do the power plant tour, you will regret your tour ending early and be envious of the dam tourists with their wristbands proceeding deeper into the depths of the damn. Overall, our full dam tour was 1 hour long. We also took time to walk the top of the dam, spending time in Arizona and Nevada. Don't forget to visit the old visitors center to see an old-school diorama. The powerplant tour doesn't give visitors the same up-close access as it once did; September 11th has changed some of the security procedures. We visited on the day after Thanksgiving, which according to some of the staffers is their busiest day of the year. It worked out perfectly because the weather was gorgeous. I can't imagine having much fun in 120 degree heat. The tour warns that it is not advisable for claustrophobic people, and that's no joke. You will be in some serious tight spaces. Also, this would be a test of wills for people who have a fear of heights. Do take the time to visit the new US 93 bypass bridge that overlooks the dam. Don't bother crossing all the way over the bridge by foot because it dead ends for pedestrians. Oh, and our dam tour guide made 10 dam puns during our dam tour.
