| - To be fair, I get one star myself for letting them get away with what they did. Bottom line, don't trust them. Here's the story:
- Our A/C quit working one Friday afternoon last August. We called Chas Roberts, who did the original installation about 5 years before.
- They showed up that afternoon and diagnosed the problem -- failed compressor.
- They scheduled a sales call for the next morning
On Saturday morning the sales rep (Hector) shows up. Here's what we fell for:
- The old system is Freon and the compressor is discontinued. They can get the part, but it will be about as expensive as a new Puron outside unit. Might as well get a new outside unit.
- The new outside unit should be compatible with the old inside unit, but may not work perfectly with it. Might as well get a new inside unit too. It's cheaper to do both at the same time, and then both will be under warranty. We're up to about $6,000.
- Since we're getting a whole new system, they have these great multi-stage units that are very efficient and will "pay for themselves in savings over a few years." We're now up to $8,000.
-They can be here on Monday for the installation. It' hot. We agree.
That evening I checked our wiring to be sure it was compatible with the multi-stage system. It's not. I called Hector to change the order to the $6,000 single-stage system. He says no problem keeping the current order -- wiring is included. I missed the chance to save $2,000.
Monday morning the crew shows up. Installation is uneventful until the end. They don't want to do any wiring, just hook it up with the existing wiring and enable "most" of the functionality. I do not agree.
Tuesday morning Hector shows up again. He's being punished -- they're making him do the wiring.
- Shortly after getting started, Hector is headed to the store for tools he forgot. To save time, I offer to lend him tools.
- After nearly all day and several holes in walls, the job is finally done. (they did send an excellent drywall guy to fix the holes).
- Hector lost some of my tools and refused to replace what he lost.
A couple weeks later I noticed they had stepped on a ceiling fixture when they were in the attic, pushing it down and cracking the drywall. Never said a word about it. I also went up to the attic and found some boxes we stored up there had been shoved off the plywood platform and were resting on insulation and ceiling drywall. They hadn't bothered to put them on the joists or put them back when they were done.
I called their office several times and was told a supervisor would call but never did. I ended up fixing the ceiling myself.
To add insult to injury, we've had the new system for 9 months now, and our electric bills are nearly exactly what they've been for the last few years. Not the slightest savings. What a complete ripoff. Lots of lessons learned, but mainly -- stay away from Chas Roberts. And don't make expensive decisions without doing your homework, even when it's really hot.
