| - Having lived in Madison for over 4 years now, I'm honestly surprised that The Old Fashioned gets so many good reviews. I'm not sure if it's mostly tourists who are influenced by the hype that this place has the "best curds in Madison", but it's simply not the case, in my opinion.
Their curds are inconsistent, and sometimes they are totally soggy and oily. The rest of the menu isn't too exciting, and the dishes tend to be bland and one-dimensional. I once had a salmon salad and it was decent, but not in any way memorable or well-executed. Ironically, I also found their Old Fashioned (cocktail) to be undrinkable.
There are SO MANY other places with much better curds, and this place is just overhyped and not worth the wait. Especially when you are on the Square, I can think of a couple other places within walking distance that have curds and dinner dishes that are 10x better. Don't get me wrong, The Old Fashioned is a historic and charming joint, so stop in, take a look, and grab a beer, but I don't recommend staying for the food.
