The quintessential dump...I've had the unfortunate experience of staying in some pretty bad places throughout my years of travelling but this place takes the cake, particularly for the price of $160/night. Here's a list of what is seriously wrong with Hotel Champ de Mars:
1. Lack of electrical outlets in the room and the ones that do work don't even hold the plug because they are so worn out (see photo)
2. CRT TVs that went the way of the buggy whip nearly 15 years ago that don't support any HDMI input or HD channels from the cable box provided. (see photo)
3. Double beds seriously in need of replacement that are too small even for my 5'8 height.
4. No blow dryers, iron or in-room coffee
5. A floor with a major depression in it making it feel like you're one step away from falling through into the lobby giving new meaning to "Express Checkout" if you catch my drift
6. Last but not least, shabby decor with ugly bed comforters, worn out wall paint and furniture that looks like it was acquired from a local junk sale.
Fact is that places like this have no business operating and charging exorbitant prices when they are obviously cheap to the point of not reinvesting in their property to maintain a minimum standard. I've stayed in youth hostels more appealing than this and that's saying something. Do yourself a favour and look for other great choices in this part of the city because they exist even if you pay a bit more. You can thank me later.
