The charcoal ice cream trend has finally made its way to Toronto. With their grand opening yesterday in the heart of Trinity Bellwoods, this is the first shop to hit the city serving up this eye catching treat. What exactly is this charcoal ice cream made from? Apparently the activated charcoal comes from charred coconut shell remains.
I chose the ube + charcoal combination which is definitely aesthetically pleasing. For those who do not know, ube is a purple yam that is commonly used in Filipino desserts.
The texture of the soft serve was creamy and dense, while the taste was not too much different from a vanilla soft serve with hints of coconut and purple yam flavour. The sweetness was just right. The charcoal waffle cone was freshly made but could have been a bit thicker as it was kind of brittle which makes it slightly messy to eat.
Am hoping that they will come up with some new flavours in the future that incorporates other colours like a light aqua blue and perhaps additional toppings like coconut flakes etc all of which would contrast well with the black charcoal cone / soft serve.
