| - MY INTERACTION WITH THE OWNER.
So I recently discovered this place about 2 weeks ago and I've been there about 7 times. The person who took my order was kind and friendly, Unlike the person I met today. The drinks are alright but what made me keep going was the hours. I found the store hours great. Especially, since I'm a student, It comforts me to know that there's a coffee shop in downtown Toronto that contains the same weekend store hours as the weekdays.
So let me start off by stating what happened today, and why I decided to make a Yelp account and let you guys know this. So Today morning I decided to get ready and head to this coffee shop. But I was a little hesitant because I didn't feel getting my usual latte from them. So I decided to try an iced latte from another coffee shop ( which btw didn't have wifi so I couldn't study there) And prior to this, I called Black Bear Espresso, to ask if they had an almond croissant ( which they did). When I got there I placed my bag in my usual spot and took my wallet and MY DRINK to the counter to order my croissant. At first the person taking my order was surprised at my drink and handed me my croissant. Since he didn't say anything I thought everything was fine, so I returned to my seat and assembled all my study equipment on the table. Within 30 mins the guy who took my order approached me and said , " oh I thought you were going to take the almond croissant to go so I was fine with this but just to let you know, we don't accept outside beverages into our store." ( which btw was reasonable) Before I could apologize, he was like "also I'd appreciate it if you didn't take up all the space on this table especially since you only bought one thing." That took me off surprise cause I've been here before and I've sat at this table the same way as I always did and ABOVE ALL, the place is dead most of the time and what I mean by that is, People hardly come in to study and everytime that I've been ( TILL CLOSE) there would be many empty spots.
Instead of leaving, I basically shifted my stuff to the corner of the table, ( although that's always been an uncomfortable seating for me) and tried to rearrange my things so that I don't take up all the room, ( which I had a difficult time with because I literally needed everything that was on the table) I eventually placed my pencil case and additional paper on the chair beside me.
Midway through my studying, I noticed that my 9 hour auto rain sound on youtube stopped working, I didn't want to get distracted so I continued with reading and taking notes. Within 30 mins towards closing, I needed to search a definition using google and that's when I realized that my wifi wasn't connected. For the past 7 days my wifi was automatically connected so I never had an issue like this before. I tried to reconnect with the wifi password that was posted in front of the store. After doing that, it also didn't work , stating that It's an incorrect password. Then I realized that the guy who served me probably changed the password ( 3 hours ago, when my music stopped ) thinking I'd leave cause I WAS THE ONLY ONE USING A LAPTOP!
By the time everyone left was 7: 45 and I was wrapping up while feeling the tension through the guy who served me eyeballing me. As I packed my bag and got up to wear my cardigan, the guy then was like, " hey so again, next time don't bring in outside beverages and also I'd appreciate it if you buy more then one thing if you're going to stay here for about 6 hours." And me being already pissed off just stared right at him for good 10 seconds after he stopped talking and he was like I have to pay rent to keep this place running, which is understandable but again, not really my problem. This is a business above all he should first known how to treat customers, it doesn't matter if I buy one thing or 10 things. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TREATED EQUALLY. also, I'm a student which means it tough with me and money, if I have to spend 10$ everytime i needed to study at a cafe then that's bullshit. Having said that, half of the customers that give businesses to cafes like his are students and keeping that in mind an owner like him should have known this.
overall, he was settle and polite but inappropriate in content. Having said this, I know the difference between good customer service and bad, especially since I work as a barista myself. But even before I became a barista, I've been treated really kindly by other cafes, which is why I had to make a Yelp account just to express how I feel cause this shit was like unacceptable.
P.S. THE CROISSANT WAS FUCKEN DRY!
