  • I usually stick to the chains of Aloha Kitchen or L&L when I am in the mood for Hawaiian food. Tonight I decided to mix it up a bit and try Ross J's. I had planned on trying their wonton min (wonton and saimin soup). Unfortunately the broth is shrimp stock and I have a shellfish allergy :( I'm glad I asked. I also wanted to try the Shanghai Lumpia but I didn't see them until I had already ordered. Which was fine. I ordered a local plate which has BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, two Spam musubi and a scoop of macaroni salad. This is pretty much what I get at Aloha Kitchen minus the scoop of rice. I don't need that much rice any how so no worries there. To say this local plate is a mixed plate is true on two planes of reality. There is a good mix of food with four different items. It is also a mix of awesome and a let down, sadly. To start with, the BBQ beef was hands down the best I've had at any Hawaiian place. It is tender and well cooked. You can taste the natural flavors of beef and the freshness there within. I only wish there was more than the maybe 6 or so small pieces. The chicken was tender also and had nice flavor. There was more of it than the beef. I take issue with the skin. I dislike chicken skin and will only eat it if it is crisp. Some pieces of chicken on my plate had a nice crispy skin. At least on one side. Other pieces I pulled off the skin. Its a textural thing. The musubi was fine. Tender nori. A lot of rice. A fair amount of Spam. A good example of what Spam Musubi should be. Then I get to the macaroni salad. I usually love Hawaiian style macaroni salad. The creaminess is unrivaled. It never goes to waste on my plate. But the macaroni salad I just had tonight I could not finish. Sure, it was creamy like it should be but it was also incredibly salty. I've never had a macaroni salad of any variety which has been so salty. I don't know if this is just Ross J's recipe or if it was a mistake but I could have done without it. The service here is friendly but the food I found to be a mixed bag. I'm glad I gave them a try but it may be a while before I come back.
