| - This gallery is one of the most beautiful spaces I've had the pleasure of being in. It inspired me to become a member several years ago and it's one of my favourite places in this city. I can't say enough about the AGO.
The exhibits are always well presented. Well thought out, well planned, well labelled and displayed, each exhibit provides an opportunity to learn and appreciate whatever the subject matter may be - from abstract post-expressionism to Picasso, the Modigilani, to David Bowie, to the masterpieces from the Guggenheim's Great Upheaval, these exhibits hold up for multiple viewings. Even though they are frequently busy, the presentations are so good that you can have your own private experience each time. The audio guides are also often very helpful.
The main collection boasts rooms and rooms of Group of Seven paintings, a gallery of miniatures I just love, a collection of model ships in the basement and other regular pieces that are a treat to visit and revisit with friends or on my own. The members lounge is in the lovely old Grange building at the back of the AGO facing the park which is so rich in history I just love being there too. Even if you aren't into art, the building itself is exquisite and having a coffee in the Dundas facing wood and glass atrium is a great view as is the spiral staircase - all designed by Frank Gehry.
The gift shop is a must-see on any visit. A beautiful jewelry collection of Canadian artists, a kids section, a huge book selection and a number of other kitchen gadgets, houseware and even clothing can be found here. 10% off is offered to members.
I love art museums and see as many as I can when traveling. I can confidently say that the AGO is a world-class art gallery. If you're visiting Toronto or living here, the AGO is an institution worthy of our support.
