| - Sorry, I'm going to go for a solid 2 stars for this one. I've been to more than my fair share of Vegas buffets, and this one is just not good. It's not so horrible that it deserves 1-star status, but just looking at the overall picture, there are just so many better choices in Vegas if devouring buffet food is your thang.
Let's start with the main category for review, the food. Very limited selection, no standout dishes, and very disappointing crab legs. They were all still partially frozen, and still tasted like chemicals with salt. Plus, they were just flat out wimpy. If you're going to provide crab legs, might as well skimp on everything else and go for broke on the crab legs. People will no doubt remember that the most and return for that alone. Count me in as part of that group.
Just about the only decent things to eat, in my humble opinion, were the prime rib and the fried shrimp. The prime rib was actually pretty tender, juicy, and had a good amount of flavor. The fried shrimp was a hit, as there was a huge line just to grab those suckers. I guess it's not too hard to properly fry seafood, but when done right, people will gobble it all up like there's no tomorrow.
The buffet layout was small, cramped, and not good at all. If Mandalay Bay is serious, they should just tear it down and start from scratch with a new and improved version. Other hotels have done just that, with sucess. Overall, this is Vegas and there are better choices. But if you're stuck in the hotel and you're desperate for the buffet experience, then by all means.
