  • I've been going to Donatos since it first opened their sq one doors back in the days. Since moving east I've been trying to find a good stylist at the Don Mills location. It's been a few years of bouncing back and forth trying new stylists and new salons in the area. I keep leaving this location disappointed. At first it was because I found the staff incredibly snooty. I went back to sq one but after a year or 2 decided to try don mills again. Their attitude changed for the better but finding a good stylist was difficult. In April I got a cut from this girl who clearly wasn't experienced but was a stylist 1. My hair ended up SUPER short because she couldn't figure out how to make it even. I ended up having to ask her to stop and their most senior stylist on duty had to correct her, explain where she went wrong, and finish the cut herself. I was put in a horribly awkward position. This past weekend I went back and went with a level 2 stylist that was recommended by their senior stylist to runs the show. While I was waiting (20mins past my appointment time already) I was watching the girl in her chair basically scold her for not understanding what she wanted and telling the stylist how to cut her hair. I should've ran.... but alas I really needed a hair cut. I showed her pictures and said I wanted blunt ends and not wispy. She kept telling me that there were layers in the picture.. clearly not understanding what I was asking her to do cause she kept "correcting" me. I told her I wanted the layers but the ends I wanted more blunt and I like a messier chunky look. It took a lot of dictating and directing but in the end I got what I wanted but I felt like I basically cut my own hair. She had to recut the style 3 times cause she kept making it wispy without layers which is the opposite of what I asked. I had to continuously remind her what I asked for. When I went to pay I was shocked by the price. They used to be $65 for salon 2 and now it was $75. After tax and tip that haircut was not worth over $100! That's insane. For that kind of money I should be able to show the stylist a few photos then just sit back and relax. I shouldn't be on edge while the stylist keeps saying to be "tell me what you want me to do" every 2 minutes. She'd literally hold up a piece of hair and ask me that. Umm you're the stylist, you tell me how to achieve what I want. How am I supposed to know?! Even in the end when she tried to "wave" my hair I had to ask her to stop (I was going to a party that day otherwise I would've kept my mouth shut and gone home to wash and restyle) because she clearly didn't know how. The "waves" were very choppy like it was someone learning to do waves with a straight iron for the first time. I wish I was exaggerating but I'm not. In the end I basically styled my own hair as well.... water down, curling cream, boom done. I had to ask her to put in a root booster so my hair didn't fall flat... like why am I telling you? Shouldn't you be telling me?! It wasn't salon quality styling for sure but it was hella better than whatever she was heading towards leaving me with. Overall 2 star cause I did leave with mostly what I wanted. -3 stars because of price and the amount of leading and question answering I had to do. I would say for the amount of effort I had to put in, and the experience she seemed to have, she was worth $45, not $75. So as to not sound like a complete hater... I had gone to Ruby at sq one for probably 10+yrs or whenever she started there. Unfortunately it became too far and I wanted to find somewhere more convenient but at least once a year after trying other places and people I'd suck it up and inevitably see her. For her I'd gladly pay $75 without question but she no longer works there and now I'm really on the hunt for someone new :(
