| - HORRIBLE!!
I purchased a Groupon for a wine tasting and "make your own wine" at Casavino Winery. After several calls trying to set an appointment, making the lengthy drive and struggling to find the tiny strip-mall "winery", myself (an experienced and knowledgeable wine drinker) and my date (likes wine but doesn't know anything about it) sat down to begin our tasting. From start to finish we both agreed our wines were horrible- really, REALLY BAD! No character, no depth, utterly simple, foul-tasting, fruit-juice wines that I would not buy for four dollars at Trader Joe's ) and I like several of those). I would guess my date and I left about 75% of our tastings on the table unfinished. On the bright side, our server (definitely no sommelier) was friendly, polite and helpful, although he was very slow and did disappear for a ten-minute length.
When it came to our "wine making experience", we were confounded by which wine to choose since they were all so unpleasant. After settling on what we decided was the least-disgusting choice (a watery, sugary red Zinfandel) we walked a few feet away with our server to a 5 gallon bucket into which he poured grape juice. He then handed me a packet of grey "dust" -sulfites- which I poured into the bucket while my date "stirred" the mixture with a filthy electric drill. No, I'm not kidding. Not romantic, no where NEAR authentic wine-making!
Casavino never followed up at all, in any way to let us know when our "wine" was ready to be bottled, as they said they would. Which was fine because we had already decided we did not want it- even to make vinegar from. I called Groupon for a refund
All-in-all an utterly disappointing experience with foul wines. DON'T DO IT!!!
