| - A few former co-workers and I decided to get together for happy hour on a Friday evening after work, I suggested we meet at The Rokerij, since none of us had tried it before. There were to be 4 people total in our party, and I arrived at the same time as one of my friends. We walked into the main bar area, and were greeted by a short elderly woman. We told her we were there for happy hour and there would be 4 people in our party, and she pointed to the bar, and told us to sit "over that way". We walked over and not seeing more than 2 empty bar stools we took a seat at one of the side half circle booths (which were all empty). About 3 minutes later the elderly woman came over and rudely told us "we were NOT supposed to sit there, she TOLD us to sit at the bar, and now she would have to find us a table to sit at, and that we were not allowed to just sit wherever we wanted." Looking around, the tables themselves all appeared to be empty, but okay, we figured maybe she was sitting people in another area of the restaurant. She came back and insisted we HAD to move tables, and to follow her. She proceeded to sit us at the booth RIGHT NEXT to where we were seated. Literally one booth over. No differences in the booths, nor were there any people in line waiting. We were kind of annoyed but fine, whatever. Our 3rd friend showed up and explained that the 4th in our party wasn't able to make it. We were sitting and talking for about 10 minutes, when again the elderly woman approached us and said to me "I thought you said you had a party of 4 people". I just looked at her aghast and said, we DID, 1 person canceled. She pursed her lips together and huffed away.
We asked our waitress about happy hour, and were told that happy hour is only for patrons seated at the high bar itself - not patrons "in the bar area". But we were welcome to "run downstairs in the next 5 minutes before it ends to see if we can find seats there".
We were fairly annoyed by this point, but it had been awhile since we'd seen each other so we decided to make the best of it. The food was "okay" - but over priced. (We ordered 3 small plates to split, and all left hungrier than when we had arrived).
So when it came time to leave, I took the bill (which was around $40), and gave them my debit card. When they returned the signed slip to me, I had the itemized bill showing $41, and a debit receipt for a $73 charge on my card. I grabbed a waiter and asked why I was charged $73 for a $40 bill, and he promised he would correct it. 5 minutes later, they brought me a debit receipt for the $40 charge - nothing regarding the original $73 I had been charged. I asked for confirmation that the $73 charge would be refunded, and was told "we didn't print out any slips". So I told them "Bring me the original receipt you expected me to sign then". At that point the manager (at least I think he was, he never actually said WHO he was) came over with the original $73 slip with his name and phone number on it. He told me - here this is my cell phone number you can call if there any problems. I said that's fine, but this doesn't state anywhere that I should be refunded the $73 I was charged and that is now showing out of my bank account. He then proceeded to take his cell phone out of his pocket and wave it at me (several times) and state "that's my cell number - if you have problems - call me". I said again, "I want it IN WRITING that these charges are NOT supposed to be on my account". Your cell number does NOTHING for me. I am currently showing I have $110 out of my checking account for a $40 bar tab. After I specifically asked him "are you refusing to sign the tab stating that I am due this money back?" he grabbed the receipt from me and wrote a note on it, tossed it on the table and walked away.
At no point did ANYONE apologize for charging me $73 MORE than I should have been charged. No one apologized for any of the inconvenience, frustrations and rudeness of any of the employees.
Oh - and as far as the booth seating - NOT ONE BOOTH was filled the entire time we were there. INCLUDING the original booth we sat in, that the hostess INSISTED we had to vacate.
It was by FAR the WORST restaurant experience I have EVER had. Not only was the hostess rude, the MANAGER was absolutely insulting.
If this is how they treat customers, I will take my money elsewhere. I suggest anyone thinking of eating at ANY of their restaurants, to do the same.
