| - As someone who's dog was her 4-legged child, an emergency vet who is kind, patient and caring is EVERYTHING! I can't say enough good things about VetMed! They were so wonderful to both my dog AND me!!
On December 21st, my senior Schipperke's regular vet recommended he be brought here for an emergency ultrasound as his lab work suggested internal bleeding. He was and it was found he had a mass in his abdomen & places on his liver. His iron level was also found to be very low. It was recommended he have a blood transfusion and the question of surgery for the abdominal mass was discussed weighing its size with his age.
The decision was made to give him the blood transfusion, keep him overnight in their "ICU", and give him IV fluids as well as pain meds and food. I was told I could visit and call anytime and do it as often as I wanted. I was brought back to say goodbyes and give my hugs & kisses. I called several times during the night and during his entire stay. Each conversation was met with kindness, understanding and a complete explanation of what was being done and how my Sweet Boy was doing.
The next day I picked him up. The vet had even made arrangements with a compounding pharmacy to come in on Saturday (a closed day for the pharmacy) to mix up a medication for him. I brought him home and spent the next week cuddling, loving, having family & friends say goodbye, taking pictures and seeing a glimpse of my old baby.
A week later, on New Years Eve, when it was time to say a final goodbye, there was only one place to go...we returned to VetMed. For the first time in my over 40 years of life, I had to put an animal to sleep. The ENTIRE office & staff was just wonderful!! I held my dear, sweet best friend in my arms as he peacefully took his last breath. The vet, the tech, even the front desk receptionist gave my dog, my family & me the dignity and respect I would expect. It was a bittersweet moment. But one I wouldn't want to experience anywhere else.
