| - First things first: Does anyone actually expect a Red Roof Inn to be four or five stars? I remember them being pretty good as I was growing up, but that reputation has long gone by the wayside.
I stayed in the Champaign, IL, RRI last night. I was looking for a relatively cheap motel and RRI had the dual advantages of having a room rate of only $65 (plus tax) and of being the only acceptable motel with rooms still available.
Check-in was uneventful, but about ten minutes after getting into my room, I heard someone messing with the door handle. When I opened the door (after looking through the peephole), I found a 60-ish-year-old man who just had the room assigned to him! Sorry...the room only had one bed and I wasn't about to share. I called the front desk and the clerk said something like, "Yeah...that was my fault." No kidding?!? Who else is supposed to make sure you're not giving out multiple keys to one room?!?
@@@ By the way, this is an excellent reason to always throw the deadbolt and security chain whenever you're in a hotel room; he could have just come right in otherwise @@@
So... These are the good points:
* The bed was comfortable.
* The air conditioner worked well.
* The TV worked.
* The refrigerator kept my food cold.
* Water pressure and hot water for the shower in the morning was good.
The "good points" are what you should expect for any place when you pay for a hotel/motel room. Having a comfortable bed and working appliances is pretty basic, so they don't count as anything special.
I didn't try the "grab-and-go" breakfast in the morning, so no comment on that.
But...the bad points:
* THE CLERK GAVE SOMEONE ELSE A KEY TO MY ROOM. If I had just dumped my stuff in the room and gone somewhere, a stranger would have had access to all my stuff.
* The bed's cover/blanket had a couple nasty stains on it. They weren't noticeable in the bright sunlight when I first went into the room, but they were very obvious when I turned the room lights on after it got dark.
* The toilet rim and seat have cracks which have stains in them. Not very appealing...
* The top of the headboard (mounted to the wall) had a thick layer of dust in the center of it. The ends were dusted, but the housekeepers are apparently so short that they can't reach the center (or see that it hasn't been dusted for a looooonnnnngggggg time).
* The sink wasn't cleaned well. The three visible sides were wiped down, but when I leaned forward to spit out my toothpaste, I noticed several icky spots of something still splashed on the side closest to me.
* The floor was dirty. When I got out of the shower, I shuffled out to the sink on top of the bath mat -- just five feet or so across the wood/laminate floor. When I picked up the bath mat, there were two very dirty spots where my feet had been. The floor has obviously not been mopped in a while.
So...I slept in an air-conditioned room with a good shower in the morning. That's about all I expect from Red Roof Inn.
