  • You need to get away from the tourists, the bright lights and the razzamattaz. You want to talk to someone who actaully lives in Las Vegas. You want a decent meal without being ripped off. Go here. Ellis Island is a comparatively small property two blocks east of the Strip. But two blocks in 40*C is a bit too much to walk, so take a cab. You'll find a small, friendly hotel with the inevitable casino, with its own microbrewery, a comfortable restaurant, and The Village Bar, a hang-out for locals. In the restaurant, you can eat a substantial meal (all the American favourites) for about $10-12, and drink a pint of their own beer for $1 a glass. The Casino has less of an 'edge' to the house, for example 1-deck Blackjack instead of the normal 2 or 3 deck versions on The Strip. In the bar, you'll rub shoulders perhaps with workers who are refreshing themselves after a day of toil, and who are more than willing to chat about baseball or American football or politics. Outside, it's still 40 degrees, so ask them to call you a cab.
