  • Ah, where to begin. I'll start with the good. My brandy old-fashioned was great. My waitress was both competent and pleasant, which isn't all that common these days. Advice to her: leave. You can do better than this hole. Now that I've covered the high points, I will move on to the real review. Queen Anne's is an old catering/banquet hall that has seen better days. However, the better days here were likely long before the better days at other places. Yikes. The ambiance is best described as institutional, combining the worst parts of a caterer and a hospice. The decor is so tired it is exhausted, with old-school metal stacking chairs and widely spaced tables. Industrial grade carpeting covers the floor. At the entrance to the dining room stands a plastic folding table upon which a cash register stands. As for staff, it's bad. There is no apparent management. Most of the employees are pushing their so-called uniform requirements to the edge. Ties barely knotted, studded metal belts with dress pants, rolled sleeves revealing poor tattoos and men with 3 days of stubble. There is a live pianist who is both bad and has apparently not updated his headshot displayed on the postboard since 1986. At least the bartender and my waitress were well presented and pleasant. Food was miserable. The basket or rolls and cheddar-chive biscuits (I'm fairly certain about the flavoring, but who really knows?) were dry and crumbly. Cole slaw was chipped rather than shredded and overdressed to boot; it was positively swimming in a watery, mayo-based dressing. The baked beans served were a strange and under-cooked mix of navy, great northern, and either small red or large black beans. Their sauce was fair in quality (at best) and rummy in flavor. Pass. As for the main course, the fish was square -- literally. That's a bad sign. Cooking quality was mediocre and flavor only fair. Tartar sauce was food service quality and likely came from a tub sold at Costco. I had opted for "Roastys" potatoes and should have known better upon sighting the misspelling. Instead of a good Swiss roesti of crisp potatoes, fine shredded onion, butter, and Emmental cheese, I received a soggy mess of potato with coarse chopped onion and oily cheddar. It tasted surprisingly decent despite the appearance; still, it remains an indictment of their culinary skills and/or staff. I seriously doubt there is anyone directing quality and I'm probably the closest thing to a chef that has graced this place's presence in the last 20 years. The last straw was when I got up to use the restroom and left my bill, my jacket, a notepad, and my cocktail at the table. I returned in time to see my place being cleared and my waitress trying to stop the busser from clearing my place, including my still more than half-full drink. What the hell, man? All my things are there and it's obvious I wasn't done. My waitress offered to replace it, but I did not want to be there anymore. I mentioned it to the guy (manager?) who was manning the cash register when I brought up my bill and got neither an apology nor an offer to take it off my bill. What a crock. Queen Anne's is a complete waste of not-very-valuable real estate on the west side. If you want a good fish fry, stay away. If you want a mediocre fish fry, stay away. I you want a poor fish fry, stay away. If you want an actively bad fish fry, this may be your place...but I'm guessing you'll still leave disappointed.
