| - I have to start with a disclaimer that I grew up in New York/Philadelphia and recently moved from Chicago so I've had probably some of the best Jewish food in the country and I have high standards. I love Jewish food and will spend hours hunting down the best place I can find whenever I move somewhere new. That being said, I can't understand some of the people who have reviewed this place and say it's the best food they've ever had. Most of them have probably lived in LV all their lives and simply don't know any better, because as anyone who's lived near large urban cities probably knows, LV is pretty much an ethnic food-challenged culinary backwater for the most part.
To be fair, my gf and I stopped by here a while ago on a Sunday at a very busy time. The line was out in the parking lot. I figured the food must be authentic and legit. Wrong! We ordered some easy, quick to make dishes and waited almost an hour, even sitting at the counter with open spots. I get it was crowded, but the service was sub-par, the waitress would disappear for 20 minutes and never bothered to even check back with us or apologize for the long wait. They need to figure out how to serve the public properly, either they're chronically understaffed or just don't have the right systems in place. The lack of acknowledgment of poor service borders on inexcusable and even if the food had been better I still would have thought twice about returning.
The "fresh squeezed" orange juice with no pulp was most likely Tropicana, it was room temp to boot. The bagels are doughy and too big, pretty much tasteless. You know it's bad when bagels from Einstein's totally outclass this place. The eggs were under-cooked and mediocre. To me the true test of a good Jewish deli is how good the potato pancakes are. Total fail - they were too thick, not hot and soggy. They basically tasted like a big home fry patty, not seasoned correctly either. It was disgusting I couldn't even finish it.
They didn't want to substitute anything, and every add-on dish was $6 or more. It was big-city prices for an inferior execution. I honestly lost my appetite and was so disappointed with their "real Jewish food" that I couldn't wait to get out of there.
Nothing seemed special or unique about this place - they just overcharge because there really isn't any competition in the jewish deli biz in Vegas. I'd rather eat at Subway then ever go back to bagel cafe. For those of you who don't want to be part of the sheeple herd that seem devoted to this train wreck of a pretend Jewish restaurant, I highly recommend Weiss Deli in Green Valley, Henderson. It's a hole in the wall with spot-on service that can give some of better delis in Chicago a run for their $. The matzo ball soup is served in a trough-sized container and one matzoh ball is literally baseball sized, enough for 2 or 3 to share. The plates there are so big you could eat for 3 days on a sandwich. Compare the two and see for yourself - I guarantee you won't be disappointed. It's doesn't get much worse than Bagel Cafe.
