| - Sad to say, but I have to knock off a star and remove Carlsbad Tavern from my "Best of" list. My last experience there wasn't very good. Overall, I still love this place. I've taken out-of-towners here, and will still return myself. However, my last experience there makes me hesitant to recommend it to everyone.
The flavor of the food we ordered was bland, and the temperature was much too close to lukewarm for my liking. The Lobster Enchiladas were meager, tepid, and the flavors didn't really meld. We've ordered these before and they were much more bountiful and robustly flavored. The fish tacos were "Bleh." No flavor and they smelled profusely like fish--which often means the fish isn't very fresh. I don't often order seafood in the desert because of the freshness factor, but I thought I was safe at Carlsbad. Maybe not.
The service was good, thankfully; and they offered to replace my meal with something else. I took them up on the offer, and the replacement meal was much better than the one I sent back. Still, Carlsbad Tavern wasn't the type of place from which I expected to receive a sub-par meal. I can only really say now that it's 4-star good, and not 5-star amazing. Hopefully my next experience there makes me want to add the fifth star back.
