  • I was in Cleveland for a week, and when Googling things to do in the city, this place came up! Well, as a fan off all things spooky (e.g. vampires, witches, aliens, etc.), I was like wth, why not? I go to cemeteries back home, and even toured several cemeteries in NOLA, so visiting this place wasn't too weird. If you haven't read the book, Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard (SHAMELESS LITERACY PLUG!!!), you should! It's the biography of President Garfield and his assassination. Well, Garfield was from Cleveland, and this cemetery is his burial site. There is a memorial building in the western side of the cemetery, and if you appreciate history, that alone is worth the visit. It's giant castle/turret-esque building where you can see a statue of President Garfield. You can take the winding stairs up to an outdoor balcony and view Cleveland's cityscape. And you can take the stairs down to the crypt where President Garfield and his wife's caskets remain. Very National Treasure like. The Wade Memorial is also worth checking out! The building and interior was designed by Tiffany and is truly astounding! Docents are on hand to chat with you about the history of the building as well as to help decipher the meanings behind all the religious imagery. Highly recommend chatting with them! What made this visit so amazing though wasn't the grounds (although they are beautiful) or the buildings (which are also great), it was the staff! Little city girl that I am, I assumed I could walk around and find all the cool things to see. These grounds are huge, and even though I assured the staff that I could walk from building to building, half way through my cemetery walking excursion, one of the staff drove his car to me and offered to take me on a mini-personal tour! Who does that?! IT WAS SO NICE!! I also had my suitcase with me, and they offered to hold my giant bags while I toured around. Beautiful cemetery, knowledgeable docents, cool headstones and buildings, and some of the friendliest staff I have ever met, I would come back to this cemetery in a heartbeat...while I still have one.
