  • I have to say, I was expecting to be underwhelmed here, but left feeling pretty impressed. Inside you'll be greeted with a cozy, sexy ambiance, and if you have the chance, sit upstairs next to a fire place. This place appears to be another one of those Pittsburgh used-to-be-a-house-but-now-I'm-a-restaurant buildings ( think Harris Grill in shadyside, Remedy in Lawrenceville). You can tell by the placement of the cozy little rooms upstairs. ANYWAYS. Food. Hang on, before food, service. I was seriously impressed by the service. I went on a Wednesday night and it was COMPLETELY packed. I couldn't get a reservation till 8:30pm. Apparently it was the last night their grouopon was good, so people were flocking there to get their discounts. I thought, great, this is gonna take all night and I'm gonna get cold food. Nope. Service was just as if it were a normal night. Our waitress did seem a little rushed, but she did not skimp on a single thing. Ok, now food. I got the roasted pork shoulder topped with (candied?) jalapeño, with black eyed peas and pickled green tomato. I was a bit apprehensive to try this because I don't typically like jalapeños or beans that much... But somehow the combination was heavenly. The pork shoulder on the outside was crusted, sweet, and crispy, the inside tender and juicy. The jalapeños on top were sweet, and only subtly spicy. Black eyed peas? Not many places do black eyed peas, and I'm glad they did. Full of flavor, I'd have eaten a bowl of them. And the pickled green tomato was the perfect punch of flavor to round everything out. For libations: I had a glass of their best Chardonnay, no complaints on that. And also a "Blood & Sand" which was a combination of scotch, cherry heering, vermouth, and orange. I'm not usually a whiskey fan, but I enjoyed this regardless. My dining partner got the Mac and cheese which had fish and egg on top. What kind of fish? No idea, the waitress didn't know, so we'll go with "white fish." I had a taste of it, I have to say I prefer Harris Grill's, but this was pretty good too. And for desert we both got crème brûlée. Unfortunately I was disappointed with this. It was quite a large portion, but it was overcooked. So it was a bit curdled, the consistency I would probably describe as a whipped yogurt but thicker. The consistency should be creamy and silky. It still had a nice flavor I suppose. Anyways that's really my only complaint. Half a star for the mystery fish, and half a star for overcooked crème brûlée. I'd come back and try it again.
