  • BACKGROUND As I've mentioned before, my dad lives for the latest and greatest in fine dining, and this time, he picked Zinc Bistro in Kierland, North Scottsdale. ZINC BISTRO In 2016, Central Bistro in Phoenix sold to New Owner Group, that includes Chef Matt Carter of Zinc Bistro. Bistro Partners, the group that now owns the restaurant, comprises partners James Shough, Mark Drinkwater, Brian Raab, and Matt Carter; the last being the well-respected chef behind three other restaurants in Scottsdale: Zinc Bistro, The Mission, and The House Brasserie. Osio Culinary Group founder German Osio says selling Central Bistro, which he opened in 2012, gives the company a chance to "sharpen our focus on aggressively expanding SumoMaya at a national level," according to a press release. The Osio Culinary Group still operates three other restaurants in metro Phoenix: Local Bistro, SumoMaya, and Kale & Clover. So what does all that name dropping mean for Zinc Bistro? Firstly, it means that all of the places listed aren't individual places with individual owners; that many Phoenix/Scottsdale restauranteurs, in fact, are all in bed together, creating some of Phoenix/Scottsdale hotspots. In regards to Zinc Bistro, it claims to be a "true New York style Parisian Bistro" located in the heart of Kierland Commons, in Scottsdale, Arizona, featuring Chef Matt Carter's modern French cuisine. Owner Terry Ellisor was the first restaurateur in Scottsdale to feature the now popular communal table, which you can find at Zinc Bistro. Whilst sharing with friends you will be overlooking Zinc Bistro's oyster bar. Zinc Bistro's Chefs, are under the guidance of Chef/Owner Matt Carter and Chef De Cuisine David Bowman. THE STORY & SERVICE EXPERIENCE My dad said he was taking me to Zinc Bistro and to call for reservations. When I called for reservations, I was told they had nothing available that day. I told my dad what they told me, so he called, and they immediately got him right in. So, we popped over for a late lunch. My immediate impression: Cute but not worth all the drama. I got the Monte Cristo coffee, which was served with a bowl of salt with a spoon, instead of sugar. Obviously, they replaced the drink. A funny aside, but why serve a $12 coffee drink with a bowl of salt? My dad tried their delicious cheese board and fries. I tried their freshly steamed mussels In drawn butter, which were very good. Zinc Bistro's Claim: "Each of our servers has been accredited as a level one or above sommelier and can offer sincere suggestions based on your preferences." But the service we got was eh, not that great. I'll be generous and assume it was a one off, but NOTHING about our service/server was at any accreditation level in any topic. CONCLUSION Their Motto: "Come and spend a day reminiscent of a daydream trip to Paris, be greeted and remembered by a staff that truly strives to give you a very special dining experience, we promise you won't be disappointed." NONE of their motto was accurate. Nothing about Zinc Bistro is reminiscent of Paris, the staff was rude on the phone and not efficient nor accurate in person, and I was disappointed. It seems like this establishment is looking to be seen as exceptional. To be considered exceptional, one must be exceptional. At least that's my opinion. I'm being VERY generous with the rating. 4/5 RECOMMEND OF NOTE *It's In Kierland: Parking is comme ci comme ça. *For more information: zincbistroaz.com
