  • After many years of thinking about seeing a big show here, my friend and I decided to see Elton John's show on a Saturday night. It still amazes me how Caesar's built this venue literally right off the center of the main casino floor to make it so damn convenient and easy to find. The inconvenience came with actually picking up our tickets to the show, but I'm not sure whether to blame Caesar's Palace or Vegas.com where I buy many of my show tickets including these. Despite purchasing specific reserved seats almost a month in advance, I was only allowed to pick up these tickets in person at The Colosseum box office starting at 4pm on the day of the show. AND if I hadn't picked them up one hour before showtime, I ran the risk of forfeiting my tickets. Frankly, that is complete bullshit. When buying reserved seats, especially that far in advance, you should have the opportunity in 2015 to print out your tickets online, pick them up at the box office anytime in advance of the show and almost certainly should not risk actually losing your seats (and the money you paid) if you arrive within an hour of the performance. This alone forced me to make an extra trip to Caesar's hours before I would otherwise have been in the hotel and casino and was just completely unnecessary. Unlike other concert venues in Las Vegas, such as The Joint at Hard Rock, drinks are not permitted to be walked into The Colosseum from the casino floor, nearby sportsbook or restaurants. That's another negative for this experience and I know I can point fingers at Caesar's for this practice. Once inside, drinks were not only way overpriced, but service was painfully slow and prevented a number of people from seeing the beginning of the performance because lines did not move. This was a combination of slow bartenders and lack of staff working the concession areas. Finally in our seats in the balcony, an Elton John concert speaks for itself as I've seen him previously outside of Las Vegas. Unlike some other acts in their later years, Elton sounds better now than when he first recorded most of his hits and his enthusiasm for his fans is palpable. Acoustics were very good, sightlines from balcony seating were about what you would expect from a Vegas theater and the ability to move major pieces on set to reveal a huge 180 degree screen behind the stage was rather impressive (Although I wish the entire show had been presented that way). I did miss having the benefit of video screens on either side of the stage, as you normally get with concerts like this at arenas and amphitheatres across the country. Yes, I know this is a smaller venue, but especially for major acts like an Elton John that sit at a piano for 99% of the show, those video screens allow the entire audience to actually see the performer's face rather than look at the side of his head. While I won't hesitate to pay to see Elton John perform again in the future, I think I've crossed The Colosseum off the list. Once is enough unless they book a residency for some amazing entertainer that I've never been fortunate to see somewhere else...and Mariah Carey is definitely not it.
