| - Not sure why people think $50 to go see a doctor without any insurance is expensive. What is your co-pay to see your doctor? Almost $50, and then your insurance gets hit for another $100+. You might find another vet that charges slightly less for an office visit, but we are talking about $5 or $10 people, and they are not going to have the kind of track record and facilities that UAH has. My 11 year-old sheltie had to have her teeth cleaned and two back molars extracted, gum flaps stitched up, etc. From the pre-op blood work to the pain meds they sent us home with, the total was less than $800. For some reason most people gasp at a number like this, but I just got my wisdom teeth removed and it cost me $1500 - and that was with dental insurance. My oral surgeon didn't do any pre-surgical testing, or have an EKG or a breathing monitor to ensure my health and well-being during the procedure either. I should have seen if Dr. Bastek would have pulled my teeth. Probably would have saved a ton of money. They took great care of my dog and did a wonderful job. I dropped her off in the morning and she was back home by 4 p.m., fully recovered in just a few days. Dr. Bastek even aspirated a lump to check for cancer while my dog was under, and didn't charge me a thing for that. They do prefer to sell you prescription and other items from their office, which are, of course, at full retail with state sales tax. So does every other veterinary office in town. I have never had a problem getting a prescription if it is not an emergency and I prefer to order from a wholesale provider. As for appointment wait times, I typically spend less than 10 minutes up front, with another 5 - 10 minutes waiting in the operatory. Again, what Dr.'s office have you ever been to where you didn't wait out front and in the exam room for 15 - 30 minutes or more? Emergency situations arise, appointments can go longer than anticipated, and sometimes an office can get a bit behind - especially if your appointment is after work at the end of the day. One can always call first to check and see if they are running behind. I was going to be late for my appointment once, called to let them know, and the front desk said not to worry, the appointment after mine had already arrived and they would see her first and I could have her appointment. Bottom line, this is a great office with great vets with reasonable prices.
