  • Lived in Toronto as a fashion student for three years and I still make routine trips to Toronto to get better/fancier fabrics that I can't readily find in Guelph. This store is always my first stop! The staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful, and regular customers will find themselves with much better deals than the listed prices (which are very fair already). A rather small store compared to most others on Queen Street but decent variety and selection- I never walk out empty-handed- and UNlike many other Queen Street stores, it's clean and well lit and NOT so horribly overcrammed with fabric that you risk being killed by a fabric avalanche trying to navigate the aisles. Lots of good if fairly basic stretch fabrics (I always get basic/common colours here like black, white and grey, but for weirder shades like metallics, purple and neons, gotta go across the street), dressy fabrics like duchesse satin, taffeta and chiffon are available in lots of colours, several qualities and prices of satins and cottons, pretty big selection of upholstery-leathers, plenty of different velvets, some linens, wools and silks, cotton basics at decent prices, excellent place to get muslin fabrics for mockups (they can sell you the whole darn bolt! And it's not all rumply and flimsy!), and there's a little alcove-shelf of gorgeous trims that I only wish I could find a use for. The staff will do burn tests for you to determine fiber content too, bonus! Having sewn historical garments that absolutely had to be 100% natural fiber for summer heat, that was a great bonus in knowing exactly what it was made of. However, very little notions (got to go across the street to Affordable Textiles for those, or if you like nonexistent customer service and rude employees, King Textiles) and lacking in garment pleathers, too, I usually have to go elsewhere. But I also never have trouble getting swatches; if you only need a small piece to remember precisely what it was or to send to a customer for picking colours, they'll cut generous samples for you without having to buy a minimum and are always REALLY patient with me hemming and hawwing over five or six things and not actually buying yardage until later. My only real annoyances are that they don't label where things are, so first-timers usually need to ask for where something is (I only manage to avoid it because I've been there too many times to count!), and that the store is closed on Saturdays (its owners are Jewish). They're open Sunday to compensate, but that's when all the OTHER stores are closed! So best to schedule a weekday trip if you need both fabric and notions or plan to go to multiple stores. Also, you'll get more personalized customer service when not in the busy hours. As I sew for a job AND hobby, I never go on weekends as I'm usually in here for a solid hour.
