  • A year ago I was looking for a new ob/gyn office since my prior doctor retired (after seeing her for the last 25 years). My old obgyn recommended Dr. Mike Urig and I noticed he was a Phoenix Top Doc back in 2010. I felt confident that this would be a good transition. Unfortunately it's been very disappointing and I'm sad that he came recommended by my old doctor. Dealing with Maricopa OBGYN offices has been really frustrating. I've seen Dr. Urig two years in a row and he's misdiagnosed me twice. The second year I went to see him (June 2017) he rolled his eyes at me when I told him I had been consulting with a naturopath concerning my health concerns. He made a comment that I will just have to choose who I am going to trust. He prescribed me birth control pills even though I am over 35 years old. BC Is NOT recommended for prolonged use or women over 35 (just look at the medicine inserts!). Then after this yearly exam my insurance was billed for two different claims including a "sick visit". Turns out - if you go to your annual wellness exam with any questions or concerns you will get billed with a "sick visit". According to their office it's a courtesy they offer (you sign a waiver consent form at the time of the appointment) so that you don't have to schedule a separate appointment. Oh thank you for this convenience! Please, someone, tell me - when and why did our healthcare system get to the point where you go into your doctor and they nickel and dime you for every question/concern. God forbid you are proactive and bring your concerns and want to discuss them with your doctor! Now it's just all about insurance and how the doctors are going to get paid. After months of calling their offices and their outsourced billing company to get answers and to dispute the charge - they didn't return my phone calls. Poor customer service! They finally left me a voicemail in December telling me to pay my outstanding balance or it would go to collections. I finally got the Billing supervisor on the phone, after my voicemails went into some black hole months ago, and she would not drop the balance. I'm not going to jeopardize my credit over $65. I told her I'd pay it but that I would not be returning to their offices as a patient. I don't agree with their billing practices and how they do business. I also told her that I would let others know about my negative experiences. Now my question is... do ALL doctor's offices handle billing and insurance claims this way?? I went to my old doctor for so many years and never had issues. Now I'm on the hunt for a new obgyn... sigh.
