  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO THE GRAND OPENING SALE HAS FINALLY ENDED! R.I.P. 3 FOR $1 BUNS. I always thought that grand opening sign was just for the purposes of advertisement. I mean, this sale had been going on for more than 2 years. But I suppose all good things must come to an end. With the passing of the 3 buns for $1, I do think this place has lost a bit of its competitive edge. Some of the buns are a bit smaller, so in terms of volume per dollar spent, you could probably find a slightly better deal. That said, regardless of the prices (which are still very reasonable, mind you), Mashion will remain my favourite Chinese bakery in Chinatown... possibly even in the GTA. They are unrivaled in their turnover, and no matter what time you go in, there will always be a fresh batch of a number of goodies. I suppose this freshness is partially what makes their buns and treats so darn tasty, but the execution is also on point. The buns are never bland, and there are always appropriate amounts of filling. Also, they do run out of some of the more popular items before they close despite making so much, so if you've got a hankering, don't wait till the last minute! I have not tried everything here (though you could probably buy one of every item without spending over $30 -- which is a testament to the sheer affordability, not the lack of variety), but there are some clear winners for me. 1. BBQ Pork Buns: at 3 for $2, these large, fluffy babies are irresistible if you're looking for something savoury and more filling than a pineapple bun. You can have 2 for lunch/dinner and save one for a snack. There's also a microwave. What more do you need? 2. Napoleon Cake: be warned, if you're used to fancy European Napoleon cake, then this is not your thing. But if you're into the HK version, this one is pretty darn good. I have had a lot of trouble finding a palatable HK-style Napoleon in the GTA, so this one is my go-to. And it's only $5! 3. Loh Mai Chee (Glutinous Rice Balls): are so delicious that they alone are almost worth the trip here. In fact, the loh mai chee here are better than the ones I tried in HK. Granted, I have yet to try all the loh mai chee in HK, but I have eaten quite a few. Anyways, they are always super duper fresh, hold their shape, and have the perfect amount of chewiness. The red bean and peanut filling are equally delicious, though the peanut filling does have a bit too much granulated sugar in it for my taste. I still devour it without second thoughts though.
