| - If you're a big movie fan like myself then you'll agree that Cineplex Entertainment's Scotiabank Theatre Chinook is the best theatre in Calgary. This theatre literally has EVERYTHING!
Allow me to elaborate, first off when it comes to movies the most important part is the viewing experience itself, and this theatre has: x1 IMAX, x1 D-Box, x2 UltraAVX, x8 Real D 3D, and x5 regular screens! Most theatres have at least 1 UltraAVX screen so this isn't that big a bragging right. Less have D-Box (5 in Calgary) which is pretty cool to check out depending on movie, these are the motion enhanced seats that stimulate you through motion as you watch the movie. The ultimate viewing experience is still IMAX though which is what gives this theatre a huge edge! Did you know there's only 4 IMAX theatres in Alberta, this is one of them! Without getting into too much detail UltraAVX has a resolution of 4096x2160, IMAX is 12,000x8,700. There's a lot of fine points and not all IMAX experiences are created equal depending on how the movie was actually filmed or if it was just converted, but I won't get into that here.
Other amenities worth mentioning: Stars and Strollers (kid friendly viewing options), x2 Party Rooms, a licensed lounge, Top Popper, TimePlay and of course the XSCAPE Entertainment Centre. The licensed lounge only operates on certain days, I think Tuesday, Friday and Saturday? It's cool being able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage while playing games or watching a movie. Hoping they get VIP viewing experience one day as well. Top Popper is a new free game that they recently added near the concession and sitting area. Although it's nothing too fancy and can be a little finicky, it's still free entertainment and it beats doing nothing (see picture). TimePlay is pretty awesome, it's an app you download on your mobile phone where you can connect to a server and compete against other people on the big screen before the movie begins. Fun addition that enhances the pre-viewing experience, not a whole lot of people have caught on yet and you can earn Scene Points by playing! The XSCAPE Entertainment Centre is still a "newer" addition IMO, previously they had a few token based games that couldn't compare to XSCAPE at SilverCity CrossIron Mills Cinemas. Although this is still a step below that facility it's a HUGE improvement of what it used to be, given the limited space it's definitely adequate. Now you can play by just swiping your XSCAPE Card (works at multiple locations), no more tokens and now you get tickets at this theatre too!
Food options here are solid as well, you got your usual concession options, lots of lanes so the wait isn't long. Plus you have Outtakes Backstage Bistro, Tim Hortons, Pizza 73, Minimelts and Poptopia. Tim's and Pizza 73 has a pretty limited menu in their theatre locations but you can still get most go-to options. The other options are what you'd expect for a theatre and are the same as other theatre locations. The only place I've had a bad experience was Poptopia, I literally waited around for over 5 minutes and no one came to take my order so I just left...
Other than that, the theatre itself it pretty well kept and maintained, things are always changing and being updated so they stay on top of their game. There's lots of box office registers, lots of self-serve kiosks and a place to sit and wait at the back. The staff is well trained and do a good job overall, some have even been exceptionally nice and conversational which is surprising for a movie theatre! Basically this theatre has everything and more, check it out!
