  • So my sister-in-law really likes Thai food. But we're in Vegas for her soon-to-be husband's bachelor party, so she's not my sister-in-law yet. Think that's confusing? Ask yourself why the best Thai food in Las Vegas is in a Korean strip mall? So I'm meeting my brother's future in-laws for the first time. There's about a dozen of them, and we're at Lotus of Siam. Somehow we got reservations for Easter dinner, because if we didn't have reservations, we'd still be waiting outside for a table. I'm not the most adventurous eater. I'm a fan of Thai food, but I'm fine with the dishes I know and love. Lotus of Siam has a lot of northern Thai dishes that aren't served at most Thai restaurants, and a lot of seafood dishes. I wanted some chicken with basil and a green curry. Both were very good. Neither changed my worldview. Future sister-in-law couldn't remember what Thai dishes she liked. Her future husband remembered and ordered for her. That's why they're married now. So if all you know about Trinidad is that Obama just visited there, you might not know that Trinis love spicy food. S-i-l's father makes his own hot sauce every two weeks because he uses so much of it. He loved the food here. S-i-l's cousin couldn't stand the spice in his cup of soup. This is why when the server asks you how spicy you want your food, you have to pay attention and not try to impress anyone. Our server (who may very well have been the owner) tried very hard to please a table full of people most of whom had never eaten Thai food before. She largely succeeded. So my recommendation would be to come to Lotus of Siam if you like Thai food, if you're interested in dishes that you can't get in most other restaurants, or if you like really spicy food. If you're a Thai fan, order one thing you would normally get, and then branch out to one thing on the menu that sounds good but you've never tried. If you throw in some appetizers, you'll certainly not go home hungry. I was stuffed, and wished I had ordered something besides my usuals. Reservations are important, especially for large parties. The decor is not fancy, although there are enough celebrity photographs on the walls to make you thing you're in the Pink's in Los Angeles.
