  • Seriously, does anyone in Phoenix actually go to Circle K anymore? Well, actually, I confess. I went recently and felt great shame afterwards. Okay, look. I didn't want to, but the nearest QuickTrip was too much of a detour. I'm sorry, QT! I won't do it again, okay? So, the other day, I walk into this location to pick up a drink and snack. I'm immediately greeted by that familiar smell of stale cigarettes that seems to be the signature Circle K scent. The interior? Dirty and dated as usual. The store itself appeared to be empty. I see no one behind the counter. Aside from myself, I spot one sole customer getting a soda at the fountain. So, I grab my drink and a quick snack and quickly place them on the counter so I can get the hell out of there. Oh, wait. It turns out the customer that I previously spotted is actually an employee! Or at least I assumed he was, since he went behind the counter, despite wearing nothing that indicated that he was on staff. He stands behind the opposite register, says nothing, and after about ten seconds of awkward silence, says: ". . . Other register." Okay? So I take my items to the other register and place them on the counter directly in front of him. The employee rolls his neck, attempting to relieve the pain that Circle K must induce upon him on a daily basis, and mumbles, "What can I get you?" "Umm...I'm buying these things right here that I just put on the counter." He rings them up and as I wait for the total to show up on the credit machine so I can slide my card. Nothing happens. I wait, wait, and wait. After several seconds of awkward silence, the employee, who I'm now convinced is totally baked out of his mind, reaches his hand out to presumably indicate that he needs my card. "Oh, I'm sorry. Is the machine broken?" I politely ask. "Nope," he grunts. Wow. Thanks for the elaboration. He slides my card, takes my receipt, intensely stares at it for a minute, making the situation even more awkward, before ultimately crumpling it up. As I walked out of the store in total disbelief, I couldn't help but think to myself that this is exactly why Circle K receives so much hate. You hire these imbeciles to work the counter, can't be bothered to train your employees in basic customer service skills that I learned at age 16, and put minimal effort into keeping your stores and staff looking presentable. Sorry, Circle K. But there's a reason why everyone goes to QuickTrip. You suck!
