| - At its core, Twirl is a pretty simple setup. Grab some froyo, pile on the toppings and you're good to go. But Twirl stands out amongst the bevy of dessert spots in the valley for a number of reasons. The aesthetics are certainly obvious as Twirl's retro beach themed layout is unique to any ice cream or frozen yogurt spot I've been to. The freedom to customize is also unique in that you really can go as crazy with your flavor combos as you want here (and there's a gazillion different ways to do so, but more on that later). And perhaps most uniquely is the ever changing lineup of frozen yogurt choices. While I've been to a number of ice cream spots that will regularly throw in a special flavor or two once in awhile, its a rarity that I see this at frozen yogurt shops. Tonight was actually my second stop here, but it was just as enjoyable as the first.
Dana Mule, the owner of Hula's Modern Tiki is the proprietor of this funky froyo invention, located right next to Hula's on the northwest corner of Central and Highland. Opened in 2012, Twirl first caught my eye a couple years back shortly after happy hour at Hula's. When you walk inside, you're pretty much the boss from the get go. Go grab one of the yogurt cups (four sizes to choose from), choose from one (or more) of the dozen different yogurt flavors and fill up your cup with as much (or as little) as you want. Then walk over to the toppings station where you choose from upwards of 50-60 different toppings options from sauces to fruits, to chocolates, to candies, to who knows what else. When its all said and done, you put your cup on the scale and Twirl charges you by weight.
For tonight, I was feeling like a moderate sized nightcap. So a medium cup. Salted Caramel is a flavor that's pretty hard for me to turn down in ice cream or frozen yogurt form so I stuck with that for my one and only froyo flavor. And then the hardest part. The toppings. I'm glad I was the only one in line at the time as I can only imagine what wafflers like me would do at this station surrounded by a full crowd. Speaking of waffles, I went with waffle cone pieces as one of my toppings. Other toppings included Twix pieces, mini M&Ms, blueberries (hey, I'm trying to get some fruit intake okay?), cheesecake bites, and a dousing of hot fudge. Like I said, I kept the size of my dessert fairly modest tonight as it only set me back $5. And of course because I made it all myself, it was divine. Another day and time I might've gotten an extra large cup with three different froyo flavors and threw on 20 different toppings, but tonight's dessert suited me just fine.
For the record I've also had their vanilla and tart flavors which are both quite excellent. Haven't had all of their topping options yet because, well, it's hard to cover 60 toppings in just two visits. Rest assured that I will work my way through them all over time. And just so we're clear, I don't have a dog in the fight between ice cream and frozen yogurt. To me, they're both equally desirable dessert options. And since the area around Central & Camelback has both Churn ice cream and Twirl frozen yogurt to cover both bases, those of you with a sweet tooth will always come out winners.
