Being that the Tropicana is one of the older hotels on the strip, it just doesn't boast the luxury and amenities that the other hotels do. It definitely attracts an older gambling crowd as opposed to the young hip party crowd that I am used to. But a positive is that right out front, there is a bridge over to MGM where you can mingle amongst a more lively crowd. Because we were here in the winter, the multiple pools were closed but they actually look very nice and have a vintage vibe similar to the rest of the hotel. You also have the option to hang out in the Trop Lounge or see a show at the Comedy Club.
We were able to check in one hour early but didn't get our first choice of beds. I find it hard to believe that the rooms that we booked weren't ready simply one hour ahead of check-in, especially when we were the only ones there. Aside from that, my room had a semi-strip view and overlooked the pool which wasn't a bad deal but the windows had slatted blinds and a sun-blocking film covering them which made it hard to enjoy the view. The beds were comfortable and clean but the plumbing in the bathroom was noisy and the TV barely had any channels. The only reason I complain about the TV is because I was there for business and had a lot of down time to kill.
The rooms are very far from the lobby so be prepared for a bit of a walk. On your way there you pass some snack stations which turned out to be very convenient. You also have the option of a small Starbucks and what they refer to as a "food court" which is just a typical cafe-style eatery. Don't be discouraged though; the Cheesesteak that I ordered was actually pretty delicious. We ordered room service for breakfast one day and I was shocked to see that 2 basic egg and sausage breakfasts cost us $45. For a hotel of this standard, that is expensive. I tipped in cash and when I closed out of my room I saw that a $5 tip was automatically included in the room service cost which is absolutely ridiculous. I really don't think that I would stay here again as its just not my style, but if you're just in Vegas to gamble then the Tropicana would be an okay choice.
