| - Amy's Donut Factory & Gourmet Creamery has a great concept with donuts made fresh to order that can be customize with a variety of fillings, icings and toppings. The owner told me he based his business on another donut place in town called Fractured Prune, which I have long been a fan of. I saw a lot of buzz on yelp about Amy's and hubby and I were eager to see how Amy's stacked up against Fractured Prune. Both have the same concept of donuts made fresh to order that can be customized, but one thing Amy's has that FP doesn't (at least currently) is they offer fillings and the choice of either plain cake or chocolate cake donuts. The chocolate cake batter is made with Ghirardelli which I think is a big plus.
Their website has a menu with the different fillings, icings and toppings offered. You can customize your donut or choose one of their creations. When I visited Amy's they had no menu board up and instead just had a piece of paper with the fillings, icings and toppings and none of their custom creations like the website had. They have this beautiful display of donuts all along the top glass and none of them say what they are making it very frustrating to choose when you don't even know what you are looking at. The owner said he doesn't have names on the donuts because people put their kids on the counter and let them run back and forth and he doesn't want a lawsuit. I saw no sign stating kids aren't allowed on the counter, something he clearly should have posted if it's such an issue so he doesn't end up with the lawsuit he fears. If he wants to make a living selling donuts, it's best to have them labeled somehow so that customers know what they are looking at.
The website says you get your donuts made fresh in 3 minutes. It took 40 minutes for us to get a dozen donuts which was really annoying. At first the owner came over and told us the chocolate batter wasn't right and if we wanted to wait it would be about 20 minutes to mix to batter. He said the plain cake batter was fine and the ones ordered with the plain cake would be brought right over to grub on while we waited for the chocolate. This didn't happen! He ended up, 40 minutes later, bringing the whole dozen and they weren't hot anymore. He took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to fill, ice and top the donuts and they got cold. A customer that came in while we were waiting ended up walking out after standing there for a good amount of time and not getting acknowledged. The guy was busy making our donuts, but could have let her know he'd be with her soon or something.
The donuts are $1.50 each or $14.99 a dozen. I was surprised with the amount of toppings some of the donuts had that they were still light and not heavy, while having the perfect crunchy outside. These are not baked, but fried cake donuts. We sampled a good variety and I have to say the PB & J, Snickers and Peanut Butter Cup were real winners for me and the banana icing was very good. These were definitely 5 star donuts. I could have easily given a 5 star review given how delicious the donuts really were, but the long wait time and donuts not being labeled really made the experience not so pleasant even if tasty at the end. I have ordered a dozen donuts from Fractured Prune and they were all hot, customized and ready in about 5-8 minutes depending on how busy they are. Aside from the customer that walked out, we were the only ones inside, so the dozen just shouldn't have taken that long.
Inside has a cute and colorful vibe with chairs, couches, tables and magazines. They also have ice cream and vegan options available. If you feel like sitting outside they have a table and chairs and the patio is dog friendly.
